About this event

Transport Heritage NSW runs the 4001 75th Anniversary Tour to commemorate the first diesel in service on the NSW Railways. The operator announces heritage locomotive 4001, assisted by 4306, for the trip, and the operator describes the 40 class as the locomotives that started the diesel revolution on the network.

The train leaves Sydney's Central Station and travels through the suburbs, then follows the Hawkesbury River and the Central Coast line north towards the Hunter region. Passengers can join at Central, Strathfield or Hornsby and get off at Maitland, Paterson or Dungog, where there is free time before the train returns to Central.

On board are restored former NSW Government Railways carriages in three classes: Open Saloon, private Compartments for up to six people in Edwardian-era carriages with polished cedar interiors, and an Observation car with open lounge seating and an observation deck. A buffet car sells light snacks and refreshments.

The operator's notes say 4001 was assembled in Canada by an Alco affiliate, Montreal Locomotive Works, and that 4306 is a 43 class locomotive built by A Goninan and Co in Broadmeadow.
