How We Pick Our Gear

The rules every product in our gear catalogue has to pass before it is listed — and the ones that take it out again.

What Every Product Must Pass

  • A recognised brand, and a current model — not replaced by a newer one, and not subject to a recall.
  • Sold on Amazon.com, shipped by Amazon or sold by the brand’s own official store.
  • Buyer rating of 4.3+ on Amazon (4.0+ for radio scanners, where the radio community’s hands-on consensus is the main filter). It is a threshold we check, not a score we show: Amazon does not allow star ratings to be displayed outside its own tools, so you will not find any here.
  • Enough buyers to trust that rating: at least 500 reviews for everyday gear, 100 for specialist gear, where fewer people buy.
  • A hands-on test by a named source for cameras, lenses, action & video cameras, microphones & recorders, radio scanners and binoculars — the categories where specifications alone say little. Elsewhere a test is a bonus, cited when it exists.
  • A second, independent check. Each product is drafted, then every criterion is re-checked in a separate pass that did not write the draft. Anything doubtful waits for the editor instead of being published.

Who Does the Testing

We only cite sources that test products in their hands. “Top 10” lists written without a test do not count. When a product carries a label such as Expert pick · source, date, the link goes to that review.

Radio scanners are the exception. No large publication tests Uniden or Whistler scanners, so a scanner gets in on the hands-on consensus of the radio community: a detailed review on the RadioReference forums or in The Spectrum Monitor, with no major flaw reported. Those products are labelled Recommended by the radio community.

What We Show, and What We Don’t

  • No star ratings, no review counts, no prices. Prices change every day; a figure printed here would be wrong by tomorrow. Each product shows a price band instead — Budget, Mid-range, Premium — and the current price is one click away on Amazon.
  • Free-licensed photos only. A product photo is a freely licensed picture of that exact model, credited with its licence. When there is none, you see the category’s icon. We do not use manufacturers’ marketing images.
  • Sorted by use, never ranked. Comparisons name a best overall pick, a budget pick, one for beginners and an upgrade, then set everything side by side.

Checked Every Week

Products change fast, so every listed product is re-checked each week: the link, the stock, the rating and review thresholds above, recalls, newer models, and whether the cited review is still online.

A product that fails is hidden immediately — never quietly swapped for another. When a newer model replaces it, the replacement goes through the same checks before it appears.

Who Pays

No brand pays to be listed, and none can. When you buy through one of our Amazon links, Amazon pays us a small commission, at no extra cost to you — the price is the same. That commission never decides what gets listed: the rules above do.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
