Why Railfans Carry It

Both maps trace long overland journeys. In Alan R. Moon's Team Asia, partners compete against other teams on a 25,000 kilometer ride from Kabul to Beijing, through the steppes of Mongolia and the Gobi desert up to the Yellow River, according to the publisher. François Valentyne's Legendary Asia follows the Silk Road and the hustle and bustle of Indochina, and the publisher promises a ride through the mountain passes of the Himalayas. The rulebooks turn that terrain into rules. On Team Asia, Himalayan tunnel routes reveal 4 to 6 cards from the Train deck, and each revealed card matching your color forces you to add another. On Legendary Asia, mountain routes carry an X: the player discards one Train Car per X onto the map's Mountain Crossing area, and each discarded car adds 2 points. Each map has its own bonus: Team Asia awards 10 points for the longest continuous path (Asian Express) and Legendary Asia awards 10 points for connecting the most cities (Asian Explorer).

In the Field

At the table, Team Asia is set up for partners. The rulebook says teams of two sit next to each other, split their color's plastic trains into two sets of 27, and score together on one marker. Teammates share two cardholders, one for common Train cards and one for common Tickets. They may make light talk but cannot exchange game information beyond what those cardholders allow. The box supplies 6 card holders and 9 plastic trains in each of 5 colors. From your base game you need 45 trains per team and matching scoring markers taken from Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe, plus 110 Train Car cards from the same game or the USA 1910 expansion. Team Asia comes with 60 Destination Tickets; each player is dealt 5 in secret and keeps at least 3. Legendary Asia has 36 tickets, 30 regular and 6 purple Long Route tickets; each player is dealt one Long Route and three regular tickets and keeps at least 2.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Two maps in one box
  • Team play with a shared score marker and cardholders
  • Himalayan tunnel routes on Team Asia that reveal 4 to 6 cards
  • Mountain routes on Legendary Asia that cost extra trains

Weaknesses

  • The Team Asia rulebook says that map is designed specifically for team play with 4 or 6 players
  • On Legendary Asia, a player without enough Train Cars to place and to discard for each X cannot claim a mountain route
  • Not a stand-alone game: a Ticket to Ride base game is required

Who It’s For

This suits a household that owns Ticket to Ride and wants either a partner game for four or six players or a map without teams for smaller groups.

Alternatives

Ticket to Ride Map Collection 5: United Kingdom + Pennsylvania (DOW7223) is another two-map box from the same collection, built around technology cards and stock shares. Ticket to Ride: USA 1910 Expansion (DOW7216) keeps the standard rules and changes only the tickets and bonus cards.
