Why Railfans Carry It

The United Kingdom map is built around steam. Days of Wonder presents it as a way to relive the early days of the railroad, which it says began in the United Kingdom in the 19th century. Players start with no technology: they can claim only one- and two-space routes, and only in England. At the start of a turn a player may discard Locomotives to buy a Technology card. Card names in the rulebook include Mechanical Stoker, Superheated Steam Boiler, Propellers, Steam Turbines and Boiler Lagging, and separate concession cards open routes into Wales, Scotland, or Ireland and France. One special route, Southampton to New York, can be claimed at any time without technology. The Pennsylvania map works differently. Claiming a route lets you take a stock share in a railroad named on it. The rulebook's example names the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, and at the end the player holding the most shares in each railroad scores the most. The rulebook calls Pennsylvania a state full of railroad history, through which the most famous American lines ran.

In the Field

At the table, the two maps ask for different parts from your base game. The United Kingdom rulebook calls for 35 trains per player instead of the usual 45, with matching scoring markers taken from Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe. You do not need your original Train cards for it, because the box has its own complete United Kingdom Train card deck with 6 extra Locomotive cards. Each player starts with a Locomotive in addition to four Train cards, and any 4 cards can be played as a Locomotive. This map comes with 57 Destination Tickets: each player is dealt 5 and keeps at least 3, and a mid-game draw is 3 tickets with at least 1 kept. In 3 and 4 player games both tracks of a double route can be used; in 2 player games the second track closes once the first is taken. Pennsylvania instead uses 45 trains per player with markers from Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe, plus 110 Train cards from Ticket to Ride, Ticket to Ride Europe or USA 1910. It has 50 Destination Tickets and 60 stock shares, and a 2 player game adds a dummy third player who also collects shares.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Two maps in one box
  • Technology cards that change which routes you can claim
  • Stock-share investing on the Pennsylvania map
  • A dedicated Train card deck for the United Kingdom map

Weaknesses

  • The designer says the limited starting technology often forces all players to build around London
  • The United Kingdom map is for 2 to 4 players, so a group of five can use only Pennsylvania
  • The rulebook warns that totaling route points at game end does not work on the United Kingdom map, because technologies change route scores
  • Not a stand-alone game: a Ticket to Ride base game is required

Who It’s For

This suits a household that owns Ticket to Ride and wants two map-based variants with different rules rather than extra tickets.

Alternatives

Ticket to Ride Map Collection 1: Asia (DOW7213) is another two-map box from the same collection; its Team Asia map is built for partnership play. Ticket to Ride: USA 1910 Expansion (DOW7216) keeps the standard rules and changes only the tickets and bonus cards.
