The expansion changes which routes you are asked to build rather than the map you build them on. Days of Wonder says the added tickets and rule variants "really change your strategies and tactics," even for long-time players. The rulebook describes three ways to play. In the 1910 variant you use only the 35 tickets marked with the 1910 logo, and the GlobeTrotter bonus card for the most completed tickets replaces the Longest Route bonus. The Mega Game shuffles all 69 tickets together and keeps both bonus cards in play. Big Cities uses only tickets that include at least one of seven big cities, printed in red on the cards: Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Seattle. That deck is 35 tickets, 15 from the original set and 20 added ones. The box also holds four Destination Tickets from the long out-of-print Mystery Train expansion.
At the table, this box supplies cards and a rulebook only, so the board and trains come from your base game. Asmodee lists 181 large-format cards, the same size as Ticket to Ride: Europe cards. According to the rulebook they are the 35 added Destination Tickets, the 15-point GlobeTrotter card, and large-format reprints of the original deck: 30 standard Destination Tickets (four with their value revised downward), the four Mystery Train tickets, 110 Train cards and the Longest Route Bonus card. Setup depends on the variant. In the Mega Game each player is dealt 5 tickets and keeps at least 3, and a mid-game draw is 4 tickets with at least 1 kept. In Big Cities each player is dealt 4 tickets and keeps at least 2, with the same draw of 4 and keep of 1 later. In both variants, discarded tickets go to the bottom of the ticket pile.
