Why Railfans Carry It

Petzl lists backpacking, trekking, running and mountaineering as uses and does not mention trains, so the railfan case comes from three features the page does name. The red lighting is described as keeping you from blinding those around you, which matters on a shared station platform or in a car park where others are setting up before dawn or after dusk. The mixed beam, wide and focused together, is described for proximity and distance vision, enough to read a timetable, check a camera setting or follow a public path. The HYBRID CONCEPT design lets the lamp use the CORE battery or three standard AAA batteries, so a spare set of AAAs in the camera bag is a fallback for a long evening. A headlamp does not make it safe to walk near a track: stay on platforms, car parks and public paths. Petzl itself states that its lights are not a substitute for the lighting required in areas subject to traffic regulations.

In the Field

The CORE battery is 1250 mAh and charges in about 3 hours 30 minutes from a USB charger or a computer. Petzl specifies a USB-C cable and the cable is not included. The lamp detects the energy source automatically and adjusts its lighting performance, and it accepts AAA-LR03 batteries in alkaline, lithium or Ni-MH. A plate lets you tilt the lamp up or down. There are three lighting levels, one of them named MAX BURN TIME, and a reserve mode: the lamp blinks five minutes before it switches to reserve, which Petzl says provides enough light to walk by but not for dynamic activities. Petzl explains its figures with the ANSI/PLATO FL1 protocol: brightness is measured 30 to 120 seconds after switch-on with new batteries, and burn time is counted until output falls to 10 percent of maximum. The 625 lumens is therefore a starting peak, not a sustained figure. For carrying, Petzl recommends disconnecting the batteries from the lamp between outings to avoid accidental switch-on in a bag. For long storage it advises recharging the battery every six months and removing it from the lamp.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • 625 lumens with a mixed wide and focused beam
  • Red lighting and a reflective headband
  • CORE rechargeable battery included, or three AAA batteries
  • Tilt plate and phosphorescent reflector

Weaknesses

  • USB-C charging cable is not included
  • The light may turn off abruptly when the CORE battery is nearly drained, according to Petzl's technical notice
  • Reserve lighting is enough to walk by but not for dynamic activities
  • The reflective headband is not high-visibility protective equipment, and Petzl lights do not replace required lighting in traffic-regulated areas
  • Battery warranty is two years or 300 cycles; Petzl says lithium-ion batteries generally lose about 10 percent of their capacity each year

Who It’s For

Adults who want a rechargeable headlamp that can fall back on AAA batteries for before-dawn and after-dark time at stations, car parks and public paths. It is the step up from a basic lamp when a red light and a tilting body matter. It is a convenience for hands-free work, not safety equipment for the trackside.

Alternatives

The Black Diamond Spot 400, whose page lists 400 lumens, an IPX8 waterproof housing, power from either the BD 1500 rechargeable battery or three AAA batteries, and a digital lock against accidental use when stored. It gives up output against the Petzl's 625 lumens.
