About this cam

Virtual Railfan's camera at San Juan Capistrano, California, is hosted by Trevor's at the Tracks, set in the beautifully restored 1894 Santa Fe depot. The camera offers trackside views along Metrolink's Orange Subdivision — part of the busy LOSSAN corridor through Orange County. The traffic is mostly passenger: Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink commuter trains dominate, with a few BNSF freights mixed in. The location is a designated Quiet Zone, so horns are usually silent, though engineers may still sound them at their discretion. The grade crossing visible in the shot has been converted to a pedestrian walkway only. A live railroad-radio feed accompanies the picture, monitoring BNSF road and yard channels on the Orange Subdivision (AAR 22, 160.440 MHz, among others). The stream has run since April 12, 2018.

What to watch for

Passenger action is near-constant here: Amtrak Pacific Surfliners and Metrolink commuter sets call at or roll through the platform of the 1894 Santa Fe depot, with the occasional BNSF local or freight on Metrolink's Orange Subdivision. Because it is a Quiet Zone the trains often arrive without a horn, so watch the signals and the pedestrian crossing. The live BNSF road-channel radio feed (AAR 22, 160.440 MHz) gives away moves before they appear, and the depot's Mission-era architecture and palms make it one of the most scenic railcams on the LOSSAN line.
