About this event
Museet Gamle Vossebanen, the Old Voss Line museum, runs its Christmas train together with Janusfabrikken, the underwear factory at Espeland, on Saturdays in the weeks before Christmas. The museum is a non-profit run by volunteers, within Norsk Jernbaneklubb, and the operator calls its line Norway's only preserved main-line heritage railway with a steam locomotive, a dining car and teak carriages. The Christmas runs use a railcar: the ticket pages are titled "Juletog med motorvogn".
On these days the train carries families between Garnes and Espeland, where the station stands right in front of the factory. The operator says the long-established factory opens its doors for a Christmas shop with extra offers, with mulled wine and gingerbread, and that Espeland station is open and serves mulled wine and gingerbread too.
On board the operator promises Christmas atmosphere for the whole family, free mulled wine and gingerbread, a small gift for the children and perhaps a visit from Santa.
What to expect
A return trip between Garnes and Espeland by railcar, or the same trip in the opposite direction, with a stop at Espeland to shop at the Janus factory for as long as you like. The operator serves free mulled wine and gingerbread, gives the children a small gift and says Santa may show up. The Christmas ticket is valid for the outward trip and for a return at any time you choose.
Practical info
Garnes is the museum's main station, where the operator says all train trips start: Tunesvegen 8, Garnes, Bergen. The operator asks visitors to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure at Garnes. Parking is not allowed on the museum grounds; the operator points to space by Garnes Gårdsbarnehage (follow the P signs). Buses 92 and 200 from Arna new station reach Garnes. Seats cannot be reserved: you may share a seating group or stand with people you do not know. Wheelchairs cannot be taken on this train because of its design. The museum accepts cards only, no cash. Tickets are non-refundable and the museum may refuse passengers who arrive late. There is no discount for Norsk Jernbaneklubb members on the Christmas train. The departure from Garnes at 14:00 leaves too little time to shop at Janus. Tickets are sold through the museum's TicketCo page.
