About this event

Mainline Steam Heritage Trust runs Raurimu Thunder, which it calls its biggest trip of the year, as a full-day steam excursion from the Wellington region to the Central Plateau. The operator describes a heavy heritage steam locomotive working the Raurimu Spiral, a section of the main trunk line on a 1 in 50 grade that climbs 139 metres through horseshoe curves, tunnels and a complete 360-degree loop.

The day starts at Plimmerton in the early morning, with further boarding at Paraparaumu, Ōtaki, Levin and Palmerston North. Passengers ride in premium carriages with large panoramic windows, a café carriage serving coffee, snacks and craft beer, and an open-air viewing platform. The advertised highlight is an exclusive photo stop at the spiral: passengers step off onto the track ballast while the locomotive sets back out of sight and then charges back up the spiral in a full-steam photo run-by.

The train returns from Ohakune in the evening, with a salon bar serving regional wine, and reaches Plimmerton late at night. The operator says the timetable was approved by KiwiRail and that, if operationally possible, it may depart earlier than scheduled.

What to expect

A very long day: an early-morning start, steam haulage north to Ohakune, a trackside photo run-by at the Raurimu Spiral and a late-night return, in climate-controlled premium carriages with an open-air viewing platform and a café carriage.

Practical info

The operator asks passengers to arrive at their boarding station at least 20 minutes before the scheduled departure, and warns that it may depart earlier than scheduled if operationally possible. Plimmerton is the first boarding point; the train also calls at Paraparaumu, Ōtaki, Levin and Palmerston North, and the return from Ohakune calls at Taihape and the same stations back to Plimmerton. Adult, Child and Family Pass fares are priced by boarding area. Groups of ten or more can email bookings@mainlinesteam.co.nz. Booking Protection can be added at checkout. The carriages may not suit passengers with limited mobility because of steps and narrow spaces; the operator asks them to call 04 233 8131.
