About this event
Hunter Valley Steamfest, branded Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest, is organised by Maitland City Council around Maitland Railway Station in the Hunter region of New South Wales. The organiser's site lists live music, roving performances, market stalls, gourmet food and kids' activities, along with heritage walks.
The rail program centres on heritage steam train rides to Hunter destinations and the ARTC Great Train Race. According to the organiser's FAQ, steam train seating is allocated, with carriage and seat numbers printed on the ticket, and the race starts at Hanbury Junction before Waratah Station and finishes at East Maitland station.
Beyond the station, the Bloomfield Group Steam Rally shows antique traction and portable engines, and a Sunday Show 'n' Shine at Maitland Park brings together more than 500 classic cars. The organiser says visiting the Station Precinct, market stalls and entertainment area is free, while rail journeys need a ticket.
What to expect
A festival precinct at Maitland Railway Station with live music, markets, food and kids' activities, ticketed steam and heritage diesel train journeys, the ARTC Great Train Race, a steam rally and a Sunday classic car show at Maitland Park.
Practical info
Held at Maitland Railway Station, Maitland NSW 2320, with the Sunday Show 'n' Shine at Maitland Park. The organiser recommends arriving by train, because of large crowds and limited parking, and lists nearby car parks and taxi drop-off zones on its Getting Here page. Rail journeys are ticketed through the organiser's ticketing partner and at a ticketing tent outside the station, and journeys that have sold out are not sold at the event. Prams are not allowed on the heritage trains and wheelchair users cannot board the heritage carriages, though storage is provided at the ticketing tent. A parents room with baby change facilities is in the Station Precinct and there are no ATMs on site.
