About this event

The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association runs the North Pole Limited from the Campo Depot, in the San Diego County back country, using restored vintage railcars operated by its all-volunteer train crews. The operator calls it the museum's most popular event.

Once on board, an elf crew leads a holiday sing-along and festive stories and serves hot chocolate and cookies. The train winds through the back country to the "North Pole", where Santa and Mrs. Claus are picked up; on the way back to the depot they visit every passenger on the train. The operator describes the whole adventure as 90 minutes long.

Seating comes in Classic Coach, in restored 1920s commuter cars; Business Class, in a Union Pacific long-distance chair car with larger seats; and First Class, in a Santa Fe lounge car with a snack bar and an open-air platform. A fourth option, the Robert Peary presidential car, is offered as a private charter. The museum says the best seats sell out quickly.

The association is a non-profit, all-volunteer museum organization dedicated to preserving the railroad history of the Pacific Southwest.

What to expect

A 90-minute round trip with an elf crew leading a holiday sing-along and festive stories, hot chocolate and cookies for passengers, a stop at the "North Pole" to pick up Santa and Mrs. Claus, who then visit with every passenger on the way back. The railcars are historic: they are neither heated nor cooled, so dress in layers, and there are no restrooms on board.

Practical info

Trains depart from the Campo Depot, 750 Depot Street, Campo, California. The operator asks passengers to arrive at least 30 minutes early to collect tickets in the historic waiting room and visit the holiday gift shop; the train cannot wait for late arrivals. Online ticket sales close 30 minutes before departure; subject to availability, a limited number of tickets may be sold at the depot. All sales are final, with no refunds for illness, missed trains or foul weather. Trains run in all weather, and cancellations are announced on the museum's website and social pages. The railcars have no restrooms; accessible restrooms are at the depot and the Exhibit Hall. The operator says access to trains during special events may be limited and asks guests who need assistance to say so when buying tickets; a chairlift is available for boarding, and its accessibility page lists only Coach Class and an open-air baggage car as accessible, not Business Class, First Class or the Robert Peary car. Dogs are not allowed during this event; trained service animals are welcome on board. Smoking is not permitted. Group bookings of 10 or more go through the reservations coordinator.
