Why Railfans Carry It

A railfan who films a passing train and wants clear spoken commentary gets little help from a camera's own microphone, because the voice is far from it. Clip a transmitter on and the voice stays close to a microphone, with RØDE quoting up to 260 m of range in line of sight. For the sound of the train itself, the feature that matters is the 32-bit float recording inside each transmitter: RØDE says audio that was too quiet or too loud, even audio that clipped, can be recovered in post-production. That margin counts when levels are hard to predict, as with a train arriving at a platform.

In the Field

RØDE lists a battery runtime of up to 7 hours. Digital Camera World's tester describes a charging bar that charges the receiver and both transmitters at once, and a canvas bag that held the units, three furry windshields and the cables, although the tester found it a squeeze to close. The receiver connects to a camera or phone, and RØDE says it also works as a USB microphone for a computer. GainAssist, which levels the incoming audio automatically, applies to what the receiver sends to the camera. The 32-bit float file exists only when you record on the transmitter itself, so plan to import that file and set its level while editing. In the tester's stair-well test at roughly 50 m the voice stayed clear even without line of sight, though the tester notes that metal and concrete in a building can interfere with a signal.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Expert pick · Digital Camera World: Digital Camera World's tester used the kit for the tester's own on-camera recording and a stair-well distance test, and praises its Intelligent Gain Assist and 32-bit float onboard recording while noting bulky transmitters and no built-in noise reduction. Who It’s For

A creator who records railfan video with spoken commentary and wants a safety recording on the transmitter, and who accepts a slightly bulkier kit than a phone-only microphone. It works with a mirrorless or DSLR camera as well as a phone. The tester says owners of the second generation do not need to upgrade, since GainAssist is also on that model.

Alternatives

The RØDE Wireless Micro is the smaller, phone-oriented kit with a charging case, but it has no onboard recording according to Digital Camera World. The RØDE Wireless PRO is the step up that Digital Camera World says has a very similar specification to this kit.
