Why Railfans Carry It

A railfan filming a trip or a station visit often wants two voices on the recording: their own commentary and the person they are talking to, such as a volunteer guide. RØDE describes the Wireless ME as the first wireless microphone with a microphone in both the transmitter and the receiver, so audio can be captured from in front of and behind the camera. The kit also includes two furry windshields, which RØDE says are meant for recording outdoors and in windy conditions, a situation common on open platforms.

In the Field

Digital Camera World's tester says the transmitter and receiver are paired out of the box and that the kit ships with four cables: a 3.5mm TRS cable for camera inputs, a 3.5mm TRRS cable for phones with a headphone jack, a USB-C cable and a Lightning cable. The tester lists both units at 32 g, and their clips double as cold shoe mounts for a camera. The two recordings can be kept as separate channels, merged into one, or the receiver microphone can be switched off. Level settings and GainAssist modes live in the free RØDE Central app, so check them before heading out. RØDE lists a range of 100 m and a battery runtime of 7 hours. In the tester's trial there was no audio dropout when moving between rooms indoors, and the tester notes that range falls if the subject turns away.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Expert pick · Digital Camera World: Digital Camera World's Rod Lawton found it ultra-simple to set up, praised the microphone built into the receiver for interviews and commentary, and noted that level control is less direct than experienced users may want. Read the review

  • Four cables and two furry windshields included
  • Analog output for cameras, USB-C output for phones and computers
  • Socket for an optional lavalier microphone

Weaknesses

  • Level controls sit in the RØDE Central app, and GainAssist modes can be confusing (Digital Camera World)
  • No direct level control when plugged into a Mac (Digital Camera World)

Who It’s For

A first-time buyer who wants one simple kit for a camera, a phone and a computer, and who values being able to record a second voice from the camera position. It suits someone who prefers fewer accessories to buy, since cables, windshields and a pouch are in the box. Someone who needs a backup recording inside the transmitter will not find that feature in RØDE's list for this model.

Alternatives

The RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3) adds 32-bit float recording in the transmitters and a longer listed range, at a higher tier. The RØDE Wireless Micro is the smaller kit aimed at smartphones, with a charging case.
