DJI Mic 3 Wireless Microphone System

DJI · Premium

The DJI Mic 3 is a wireless microphone system, covered here in its kit of two transmitters, one receiver and a charging case, in which each transmitter attaches to clothing by magnet or clip, can record to its own internal storage and sends audio to the receiver for a camera or phone.

Why Railfans Carry It

A railfan who films a trip or a day at a station usually wants to be heard clearly over loud, changing sound, and the Mic 3 is built around that problem. Each transmitter weighs 16 g with its magnet, according to DJI's specification page, and attaches by magnet or by a clip that rotates so the grille faces the speaker (TechRadar). DJI describes the Automatic adaptive gain mode as a way to prevent clipping in outdoor settings with dramatic volume swings, and TechRadar found it worked well while walking around town, where traffic noise can jump at any second. The system can also keep a 32-bit float recording, a format Digital Camera World explains lets you adjust peaking afterwards. DJI states a transmission range of 400 m in open, unobstructed conditions and 80 m in a lab-simulated high-interference environment; the second figure is the one to remember wherever radio traffic is dense.

In the Field

The receiver mounts on a camera shoe or connects to a phone through the USB-C adapter in the box; a locking 3.5 mm TRS cable is also supplied, and DJI sells the Lightning adapter separately. Digital Camera World advises setting the receiver's clock first so the internal files carry correct metadata. Each transmitter can record alone: DJI lists 57.3 hours of 24-bit single-file recording and 43.0 hours of 32-bit float, halved when a dual file is saved. TechRadar calls furry windscreens all but mandatory outdoors, and here the transmitters can stay in the case with the windscreen attached. There are two noise-cancelling levels, Low for quiet indoor spaces and High for noisy ones; Digital Camera World found the processing coped with a busy washing machine but warned it may slightly challenge sound resolution. On power, DJI gives 8 hours for a transmitter, 10 hours for the receiver and up to 28 hours with the case, and says a 5-minute charge gives 2 hours of use. The transmitters and receiver are specified for -10 to 45 degrees C, the case for 5 to 45 degrees C. Film from platforms and public areas only; a microphone does not make it safe to be on or near the track.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Expert pick · Digital Camera World: Digital Camera World and TechRadar both used the kit for several weeks. Digital Camera World found it 'genuinely difficult to argue against', praising range, battery and size; TechRadar gave it an Editor's Choice while noting no lavalier input and shorter battery life than the DJI Mic Mini. Strengths

  • Transmitters of 16 g with magnet
  • Up to 28 hours of operation with the charging case
  • Stated 400 m range in open conditions
  • Internal recording in 24-bit or 32-bit float
  • Windscreens, clips and magnets stay in the case

Weaknesses

  • No separate lavalier input on the transmitter
  • Shorter battery life than the DJI Mic Mini
  • Lightning adapter sold separately
  • Range falls to 80 m in DJI's high-interference lab test
  • Receiver can add bulk to a phone

Who It’s For

Choose it if you narrate or interview on camera and want a two-transmitter kit with a charging case, a receiver and backup recording in one box. TechRadar advises against it for anyone who wants a budget option or who films only with a phone, and Digital Camera World calls it possibly overkill for simple vlogging. Someone who needs to plug in a separate hidden lavalier microphone should look elsewhere, since the transmitter has no input for one. DJI also sells a one-transmitter kit and other bundles.

Alternatives

The DJI Mic Mini suits beginners better: TechRadar names it, with the Boya Mini, as a better bet for someone just starting with wireless microphones, and calls it ultra-compact with excellent 24-bit audio and a 48-hour battery figure. Digital Camera World offers the Sennheiser Profile Wireless as a somewhat bulkier option with USB-C or 3.5 mm connection, a safety track and a monitor socket. The RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3), Wireless ME and Wireless Micro listed elsewhere in this catalog are separate products with their own listings; compare each one's contents and recording options against the DJI figures above.
