Why Railfans Carry It

Watching trains means long stretches outdoors, and an umbrella only helps if it travels with you. This one is built around portability: Repel lists package dimensions of 12.25 by 3.5 by 2.5 inches, and OutdoorGearLab measured a collapsed length of 11.75 inches and a weight of 16 ounces, calling it easy to carry or stash in a backpack. A protective travel sleeve is included and the handle has a wrist strap. Repel presents the one-button automatic operation as meant for quick access while juggling bags.

In the Field

Repel builds the frame from nine resin-reinforced fiberglass ribs, where it says most small umbrellas use six or eight aluminum ones, and describes the canopy as Teflon-coated, waterproof, fast-drying and UV resistant. OutdoorGearLab's wind test is the useful evidence. The first sample snapped several ribs and was replaced under warranty, which the testers described as an easy and fast process. The second sample buckled at 20 mph and bounced back undamaged, with the shaft compressing like a shock absorber. It inverted at 15 mph when positioned to catch the wind, flipped back easily, and the automatic open and close still worked. A large button deploys and collapses the canopy; the testers found it takes a little more effort than most but will not fire by accident, and they liked the big handle for keeping control when the wind picks up. The measured canopy diameter is 36.5 inches with a depth of 7.5 inches, which they call fairly average coverage that does not hurt visibility.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Expert pick · OutdoorGearLab: OutdoorGearLab found the Repel sturdy and reliable in wind, easy to carry and operated by a large button, but heavier than other compact umbrellas and hard to close; it suits casual use around town and commuting. Read the review

OutdoorGearLab describes it as best for casual use around town or commuting; the weight and the firm closing action matter most to anyone who wants the lightest or easiest umbrella.

Alternatives

OutdoorGearLab points to the SY Compact Automatic as a more lightweight but similar design, and to the Lewis N. Clark Travel, which is even lighter and comes in bright colors.
