Müngsten Bridge (Müngstener Brücke), Solingen

The standing point is an OpenStreetMap-mapped viewpoint on the Müngstener Brückenweg footpath in Brückenpark Müngsten, on the west bank of the Wupper, north-east of the bridge's mid-point. From here the deck of the Müngsten Bridge is approximately 117 m (384 ft) away horizontally and about 100 m (330 ft) overhead, so trains are seen from below, framed by the 170 m (558 ft) main arch.

The line is the non-electrified Solingen–Remscheid railway (DB line 2675), carried across the bridge on two tracks as mapped in OpenStreetMap. Two passenger services use it: the S7 "Der Müngstener", run by RheinRuhrBahn with Alstom Lint 41 diesel railcars, and the RE 47 "Düssel-Wupper-Express", back on rails since 1 July 2026 with Siemens Mireo Plus B battery-electric trains run by Regiobahn.

There is nothing to climb and no fence to cross: the park is a public green space created jointly by Solingen, Remscheid and Wuppertal, and its footpaths pass directly beneath the arch. The nearest station, Solingen-Schaberg, sits at the western end of the bridge, approximately 540 m (0.3 mi) from the viewpoint in a straight line but up the valley side.

The Wupper runs through a narrow, wooded valley here, and the bridge spans it from the Schaberg side of Solingen to the Remscheid bank. Below the steel, the Brückenpark is open meadow along the river with paths, benches and a playground, while woodland climbs the steep slopes on both sides. The City of Solingen describes the structure as light and floating rather than massive, and from the valley floor that is the effect: more than 5,000 tonnes of riveted steel (Deutsche Bahn's figure) drawn as a lattice against the sky.

The river is small and shallow at this point, and the hand-pulled Schwebefähre (suspended ferry) crosses it a few metres above the water, a short walk downstream from the viewpoint.

Deutsche Bahn dates construction to 1893-1897 and the opening to traffic to 15 July 1897; until after the First World War the structure was called the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke. It is 107 m (351 ft) high and 465 m (1,526 ft) long, with a central arch of 170 m (558 ft), and Deutsche Bahn describes it as the highest steel railway bridge in Germany. The City of Solingen notes that it shortened the rail route between Solingen and Remscheid from 44 km (27 mi) to 8 km (5 mi).

Deutsche Bahn renovated the bridge in three phases between 2013 and 2021 (new deck, roller bearings, corrosion protection on 52,000 square metres (560,000 sq ft) of surface, new inspection equipment), investing more than 30 million euros. The City of Solingen lists it as a monument of national importance since 2012, and a joint UNESCO World Heritage application with large arch bridges in Portugal, France and Italy was launched in 2017. In 2025 the Bundesingenieurkammer named it a Historic Landmark of Civil Engineering in Germany.

This is the highest railway bridge in Germany, and a free public park sits directly underneath it, so the valley floor below the arch is an unticketed, unfenced vantage point. The line also shows two generations of regional trains on one 1897 steel arch with no overhead wires: diesel Lint 41 railcars on the S7 and, since July 2026, battery-electric Mireo Plus B units on the RE 47.
