About this event

The Trem Especial de Natal ("Special Christmas Train") is a night ride on the Maria Fumaça line of the ABPF (Associação Brasileira de Preservação Ferroviária) between Campinas and Jaguariúna, in the state of São Paulo. The operator says it leaves from Anhumas station in Campinas and covers 50 km out and back, and calls it a family event for all ages.

The programme, as the operator writes it: visitors are received at 17:00, Santa Claus and his assistants arrive and interact from 17:30, and the train leaves at 18:00 for Jaguariúna, where it arrives at 19:30. The return to Anhumas is planned for 21:30, with arrival at 22:30. The train is decorated and lit for Christmas, and Santa hands out sweets and, if parents choose the service, delivers gifts to the children.

Food, drinks and souvenirs can be bought at the station and during the trip, and a Christmas snack kit can be bought with the ticket; dinner can be bought separately at Jaguariúna station. The ABPF says the whole income of the ride goes to the association's work: maintenance, restoration of locomotives and other historic equipment, and the preservation of railway memory. Its FAQ notes that, for environmental reasons and to protect the historic steam locomotive, trains are commonly hauled with a diesel locomotive alongside it.

What to expect

An evening of about 4 hours with Santa Claus and a decorated, illuminated train. Visitors are received from 17:00, Santa arrives from 17:30, the train leaves Anhumas at 18:00, reaches Jaguariúna at about 19:30 and starts back at about 21:30, arriving around 22:30. Food, drinks and souvenirs are for sale at the station and on board. Santa can deliver gifts brought by the parents. The operator recommends being able to climb and descend steps.

Practical info

Departs from Anhumas station, Rua Dr. Antônio Duarte da Conceição, 1501, Jardim Madalena, Campinas, SP. The operator recommends arriving 45 minutes before boarding and asks everyone to carry a photo ID; minors under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Parking at Anhumas is available for a separate fee paid at the station ticket office. All the operator's trains have toilets that can be used while the train is moving. Wheelchair users should book ahead through WhatsApp (19) 99779-1080: the old carriages cannot be adapted at short notice, so only two places are available per trip. The operator offers special rates for groups of 20 or more. The gift delivery by Santa is a separate option: the gift is delivered on board, and the operator says gifts can be bought at the station on the day or brought from home and handed over at the departure station. In bad weather the trip can be rescheduled. The operator's general FAQ says tickets can be cancelled for a full refund until the start of the ride, through the customer area of its site.
