About this event
The Lausitzer Dampflok Club e.V. runs "Advent im Harz" as a day trip by special train from Cottbus and Berlin-area stations to Wernigerode. According to the operator, the train is hauled by an electric locomotive at the start and, after a locomotive change at Magdeburg Hbf, by steam locomotive 41 1144 for the rest of the way; the plan is provisional.
Wernigerode's Christmas market is described by the operator as one of the most beautiful Advent markets in the Harz, with more than 60 traders spread over several squares of the half-timbered old town: the market square in front of the illuminated town hall, the Lichterkirche with large light figures of Harz animals, the Nicolaiplatz "Lebkuchenwald", a Christmas cinema in the town-hall courtyard and a nativity trail along decorated shop windows.
Passengers who prefer to avoid the crowds can add a Brocken railway round trip from Wernigerode (changing at Drei Annen Hohne). The operator also points to the "Klippenglühen" in Schierke, part of the Lichterzauber, where the surrounding rocks and historic buildings are lit in colour after dark. On board, the club's service team sells food and drinks in a snack or bistro car.
What to expect
A long day by special train with a locomotive change at Magdeburg Hbf, about eight hours of free time in Wernigerode for the Christmas market, and the same train home in the evening. An optional add-on is a Brocken railway round trip. Food and drinks are sold in a snack or bistro car.
Practical info
The train starts at Cottbus Hbf and calls at Vetschau, Lübbenau, Lübben, Halbe, Königs Wusterhausen, Berlin-Schönefeld, Potsdam-Pirschheide and Werder (Havel) before Magdeburg Hbf; the operator sells fares from Cottbus and from Berlin in 2nd and 1st class. Times and routing are provisional. The Brocken railway add-on is booked together with the ticket for an extra charge. The operator asks passengers not to bring food and drinks. The trip only runs when the minimum number of passengers is reached; the fare is refunded in full if it is cancelled, with no further claims.
