About this event

The Irish Steam Preservation Society runs The Santa Train on the Stradbally Woodland Railway at Stradbally Hall in County Laois. The operator describes a steam-powered Christmas experience for the whole family.

Elves greet families at the Welcome Hut with a golden ticket and a pouch of reindeer dust. Before the ride there is music, face painting and games on the platform. Families then board the locomotive Róisín, which the operator describes as transformed into a magical sleigh on rails, for a ride of about 1 km around the decorated forest track with Mrs Claus, watching for Santa's reindeer and woodland creatures.

Back at the station children can post a Christmas letter in Santa's post box, look at vintage tractors and engines, and have a hot drink at the Steamin' Brews café. The visit finishes with Santa in his grotto, where each child receives a present. The elves take the family photo in the grotto, and the booking page says pictures can be bought at an additional cost.

What to expect

The experience lasts about 45 minutes. Arrive for your designated time slot: the train has a limited capacity. After check-in at the Welcome Hut there is platform entertainment, then the steam ride with Mrs Claus, then the Santa Village with the post box, café and grotto. Photography is not allowed inside the grotto, where the elves take your family photo (pictures can be bought at an additional cost), but there are plenty of photo opportunities outside in the Santa Village.
