Why Railfans Carry It

The Ace Pro 2 uses a single 2.5-inch touchscreen that flips up to face forward. TechRadar's reviewer found that screen larger and clearer than the front screens on rival cameras, which helps when the camera sits on a pole or window mount and is hard to reach. The same reviewer rated the stabilization as very effective, with standard and high levels plus horizon levelling, and called low-light footage strong by action-camera standards and much better than a GoPro HERO13 Black, on a par with the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. Dusk and winter-evening trains are where that matters. Insta360 lists a 1/1.3-inch sensor, an f/2.6 aperture and a camera-only waterproof depth of 12 m.

In the Field

Insta360 lists operation from minus 20 to 45 degrees Celsius, and the camera has locking flaps over the card slot, USB-C port and battery. TechRadar's reviewer found the built-in microphones clear and kept the wind-reduction audio mode on at all times while living by the sea, a useful setting for a breezy platform. His battery tests gave 69 minutes of stabilized HDR 4K at 60 fps and about 140 minutes at 4K and 30 fps in Endurance Mode, short of Insta360's own claim, so carry spare batteries. At 8K the camera overheated and shut down after 43 minutes at room temperature. It has no built-in storage, so a microSD card is required. The magnet and clip mounting system allows fast fixing and unfixing, though the reviewer says it is no better than rivals' systems. The flip screen makes quick switching between front and back shooting slower. Film only from places you may legally stand, and never place a camera or mount on or near the running line.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Expert pick · TechRadar: TechRadar's reviewer used a pre-release unit for a week and calls it an excellent flagship alternative to the GoPro HERO13 Black, with strong stabilization, good low-light video and clear built-in audio. He treats 8K as largely a gimmick and notes the lack of built-in storage. Read the review

Who It’s For

It suits railfans who want strong stabilization and better low-light video than the GoPro HERO13 Black from a camera that still fits in a pocket, and who are happy to buy a memory card. If you want a dual-screen camera or built-in storage, look elsewhere.

Alternatives

The DJI Osmo Action 6 adds a larger sensor, an adjustable aperture and built-in storage. The GoPro HERO13 Black has the widest range of mounts and lens accessories and built-in GPS.
