Bachmann sells the set as the Coastliner and describes the locomotive and cars as displaying the classic CSX paint schemes of the Eastern seaboard. Bachmann states that it is an official licensee of CSX Corporation and is authorized to use CSX trademarks. The equipment is a freight consist: an EMD GP40 diesel with a working headlight and all-wheel drive, two flat cars carrying container loads, and a 36-foot wide-vision caboose. HO scale is 1:87, which Bachmann's Getting Started page calls the most popular size and its most diverse product line, with a massive selection of train sets, separate-sale models, building kits and scenery items. The same page says Bachmann's separate-sale locomotives and rolling stock are meant for those adding to an existing collection.
This is an indoor layout. The set's track is a 36-inch circle of snap-fit E-Z Track with 11 curved pieces and one curved plug-in terminal rerailer, and Bachmann lists product measurements of 36 in. long, 36 in. wide and 2.5 in. high. Bachmann's Getting Started page says E-Z Track has a ballasted look on pre-assembled roadbed that raises trains to a mainline ride height and keeps them clear of dust or carpet fibers. The same page says Bachmann's N, HO, On30 and O scale trains are designed for indoor use only. The power pack is a US-style 110 volt unit, and the product page notes that other countries may need adapters or converters. Bachmann's FAQ says models run on standard 12VDC electric power unless otherwise stated, and this product page lists neither DCC nor sound. Couplers are body-mounted E-Z Mate; Bachmann says they couple with knuckle couplers from most other manufacturers of North American models. An illustrated instruction manual is included.

An adult starting in HO who wants a complete CSX freight set and has room for a 36-inch circle. Bachmann's Getting Started page recommends a train set to anyone starting out in the hobby, says starter sets come with a train, track and electric speed controller, and says they make fantastic gifts. For a younger child, Bachmann's FAQ says its standard-line models are designed for ages 14 and up but may be used by younger children with direct adult supervision, and that its Thomas and Friends licensed HO sets are designed for ages 8 and up.
Bachmann Thoroughbred (00691) is another HO freight starter set, with an F7 diesel, a quad hopper with removable coal load, a gondola and a caboose on a 47 in. by 38 in. oval of E-Z Track, a larger track plan than the Coastliner's 36-inch circle. Bachmann Echo Valley Express with Digital Sound (00825) is a step up: a DCC sound-equipped 2-6-0 steam locomotive, with an E-Z Command Plus control center and a 56 in. by 38 in. oval, also recommended for ages 14 and up.
