Why Railfans Carry It

Bachmann's page describes the 44595 as an 18-piece graduated pier set for use with HO or On30 scale E-Z Track, to create an over-under figure 8 layout or similar configurations. It calls the set appropriate for higher HO elevations and On30 clearances, with 3.875 inches of vertical clearance under the tallest pier. The features list says the same thing in short form: the piers gradually raise the roadbed to a maximum of 3.875 inches, they are for use with steel alloy and nickel silver Bachmann E-Z Track, and they are for use with HO and On30 scale train layouts. The page photograph shows the full set in three rows on a white background, from flat low pieces at the front to tall piers at the back, which is what graduated means here: a range of heights, not one repeated pier.

In the Field

This set differs from Bachmann's 14-piece graduated set, model 44471, in four ways that appear on the two product pages. First, the roadbed rises higher: 3.875 inches of vertical clearance under the tallest pier here, against 3.125 inches for the 14-piece set. Second, this page names On30 clearances and On30 layouts, while the 14-piece page lists HO scale only. Third, the retail package is 8 inches high instead of 7, with the same 13 inch length and 2 inch width. Fourth, the shipping weight is 1.5 pounds, against 1 pound. Both pages state the same use: an over-under figure 8 or similar configuration. Bachmann's own over-under figure 8 track pack, model 44475, is described as including the 14-piece set, not this one and the 18-piece set appears nowhere in that pack's description. The 44595 page gives no instructions, no piers-per-span guidance and no list of what the box holds besides the piece count in its title.

Who It’s For

An adult or a teenager of 14 or older building an HO or On30 layout on Bachmann E-Z Track who needs track to pass over another line with more clearance than the 14-piece set offers, or a gift buyer matching an existing E-Z Track system. Bachmann's page mentions no track, train or controller, so those are separate purchases.

Alternatives

The 14-Piece Graduated Pier Set (44471) raises the roadbed to a maximum of 3.125 inches and is the set included in Bachmann's over-under figure 8 track pack. The 8-Piece Tall Pier Set (44472) is described as an all-tall set for elevating longer track spans, with 3.125 inches of vertical clearance.
