Why Railfans Carry It

On a model railroad the track has to be powered from somewhere, and Bachmann describes this piece as the section that is connected via terminal wires to a power pack, which provides current to power the layout. The same section is designed to correct derailments that sometimes occur during normal railroad operations, so one piece does two jobs. Bachmann says rerailers are installed after difficult sections of track such as turnouts, crossings and S curves, where derailments may occur. The card in the photo is labeled 18" Radius Curved Terminal Rerailer, HO scale, item 44402, with steel alloy rails, and shows a red wire packaged beside the track section. It belongs to the E-Z Track System, which the card says assembles in minutes.

In the Field

The power connection and the rerailing function share one section, so the place to put it is a spot where Bachmann says derailments may occur, after a turnout, a crossing or an S curve. Bachmann's page also draws the line between this piece and its unpowered sibling: if you need a rerailer but do not need to make power connections, the 18-inch Radius Curved Rerailer in steel is the one to use. Bachmann sells the same function in two rail versions: this listing is steel alloy rail on black roadbed, while the nickel silver version on gray roadbed carries item number 44502.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Power connection and rerailing in one section
  • 18-inch radius curve
  • Red terminal wire included with the card
  • Steel alloy rail on black roadbed

Weaknesses

  • Only one section per card
  • Meant for a power connection: Bachmann points to a separate rerailer when no power connection is needed
