Why Railfans Carry It

A model railroad needs straight track as much as curves. Bachmann's listing says four pieces of 9-inch straight track build 36 inches of railroad, so each card adds three feet of straight run. The rails are nickel silver on gray roadbed and the scale is HO, 1:87. Bachmann also sells a 9-inch straight terminal rerailer with wire, a 9-inch straight rerailer, a 9-inch power terminal with insulated gap and a 9-inch straight electronic auto-reversing track, all in nickel silver.

In the Field

Bachmann's assembly sheet for an E-Z Track train set says the system combines snap-fit track and roadbed with a track connection that keeps alignment and a continuous electrical circuit, and calls getting the rail connections right the most important assembly step. The sheet says to keep metal of any sort off the rails, including tinsel or holiday ornament hooks, since a short circuit stops the train, to unplug the power pack at once if that happens, and that the circuit breaker resets by itself within up to five minutes once the fault is corrected. Power reaches the track through a terminal rerailer, where the terminal wire plugs in. Bachmann's page for the 9-inch terminal rerailer (44510) says to install a rerailer after a difficult section such as a turnout, crossing or S curve, or somewhere easy to reach if cars are often placed by hand. Cleaning follows the same sheet: a lint-free cloth or cotton swab after every eight hours of use, no steel wool, and no common solvents, which may damage plastics. The sheet also advises assembling on a firm flat surface such as a floor, carpet or tabletop. The manufacturer lists model 44511, a shipping weight of 0.5 lbs and ages 14 and up.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Nickel silver rails on gray roadbed
  • Four 9-inch sections per card
  • Four pieces build 36 inches of track
  • Same 9-inch length as Bachmann's terminal rerailer, rerailer and power terminal pieces

Weaknesses

  • Straights only; curves are separate listings
  • Plain track: power connection needs a terminal rerailer, sold separately
  • Rail joints must be tight and level, or trains lose power or derail, per Bachmann's assembly sheet
  • Manufacturer recommends ages 14 and up

Who It’s For

HO modelers extending an E-Z Track layout, or gift givers who know the recipient uses this system. It pairs with the 18-inch curve (44501).

Alternatives

The 18-inch radius curved section (44501) supplies the curves. Bachmann also lists 2.25-inch, 3-inch and 4.50-inch straights for fine adjustments, an 18-inch straight, a 36-inch straight sold in a 25-piece lot, and a 9-inch version with concrete ties.
