Why Railfans Carry It

Track sections rarely add up to the exact length a plan needs. Bachmann says the pack includes two each of five straight lengths, given on the packaging as .75 inch, 1 inch, 1.25 inches, 1.50 inches and 2 inches, and that these 10 pieces are designed to provide layout flexibility and can also be used as gap fillers in more sophisticated railroad construction. The shortest single straights in the same category are 2.25 inches, 3 inches and 4.50 inches, with 9-inch and 18-inch pieces beyond them, so this pack covers lengths below all of them. It belongs to the same snap-fit system as the 44501 curve and the 44511 straight already in this catalog. The scale is HO, 1:87, and the packaging shows nickel silver rails.

In the Field

Bachmann's own stated use is flexibility and gap filling. Bachmann's assembly sheet for an E-Z Track train set calls proper track assembly the most important step: snap the sections together tightly while making sure the rail and rail joiners are seated properly, because the joiners form a continuous connection for the electric current. After assembly it says to run fingers lightly over the top of the rails to check that the track is flush and level, with no bumps or distortions, and to correct trouble by checking joiner fit or with small pliers. Because every extra section is another joint, those checks matter more with short pieces. The sheet says the system works best on a firm, flat surface such as a floor, carpet or tabletop, that a rough layout made by loosely placing sections first helps with working room, and that it is best to assemble the track where it is to be displayed, since moved track can bend where sections connect. It says to wipe the rails after every eight hours of use with a soft, lint-free cloth or cotton swab, that removing black residue is normal, and not to use steel wool. The packaging reads that this finely detailed hobby product is not intended for children, and the page lists ages 14 and up.

Who It’s For

A model railroader, or a gift buyer for a hobbyist aged 14 or older, already building with E-Z Track, whose plan falls a little short and needs a few small straight pieces.

Alternatives

Bachmann's 2.25-inch, 3-inch and 4.50-inch straight sections are the next sizes up in the same category, each as its own listing. The published 9-inch straight (44511) is the full-length piece for long runs; a plan built from standard sections may need this assortment only for its last small gaps.
