Why Railfans Carry It

Bachmann's page gives this item one job in a single sentence: these bumpers properly finish the ends of your track spurs. The listing reads Hayes Bumpers (HO Scale), nickel silver track with gray roadbed, two to a card, scale HO 1:87. The card photograph on that page, which I opened, shows two matching pieces of gray roadbed with black ties; each is closed at one end by a sloped gray surround with a crossed black structure inside, and each has a clip tab at its open end. The card itself prints the E-Z Track System badge with the words Assembles in minutes, and in smaller type says the track snaps together, stays together on floors, tables and carpets, and needs no nails, screws or special tools.

In the Field

The steel alloy twin, Hayes Bumper model 44491, carries the same sentence, two to a card, but with black roadbed; the card on this page is the one for nickel silver rail on gray roadbed. Bachmann's page for the 9-inch nickel silver straight, model 44511, says four pieces build 36 inches of railroad, which gives a simple way to size a spur in pieces before the bumper closes it. Bachmann's Nickel Silver Flashing LED Bumper, model 44593, is described on its page as properly finishing the ends of track spurs while adding a flashing LED that brings lighted action and helps indicate which sidings are currently powered. That page also says the bumper is easy to use for both temporary and permanent layouts and needs no nails, screws or special tools. The Hayes card has no light, and its page lists none.

Who It’s For

An adult closing off spurs on an HO layout built from Bachmann E-Z Track with nickel silver rail and gray roadbed, or a gift buyer for a hobbyist aged 14 or older who already owns that track. Someone whose track is steel alloy on black roadbed should look at the 44491 card instead, and a builder who wants a lit end of track should look at the LED bumper.

Alternatives

Bachmann's Hayes Bumper in steel alloy with black roadbed, model 44491, carries the same description and also comes two to a card. Bachmann's Nickel Silver Flashing LED Bumper, model 44593, keeps the nickel silver rail and gray roadbed and adds a flashing LED that helps indicate which sidings are powered, according to its page.
