Why Railfans Carry It

Bachmann's page for the N-scale 10-inch straight gives the plain arithmetic of the pack: the six pieces in the package build 5 feet of railroad. The page lists nickel silver track and gray roadbed, six per card, N scale 1:160, and the card photograph reads N Scale, Item No. 44815, with nickel silver rails. The page also names the longer neighbours in the range: a 30-inch straight, nickel silver, 25 pieces per box, item number 44887. The same N-scale E-Z Track category on Bachmann's site lists a 5-inch straight, 11.25-inch and 19-inch radius curves, and a 10-inch straight terminal rerailer with wire, so the 10-inch straight sits between the 5-inch and 30-inch lengths of straight track.

In the Field

Bachmann's page gives the model number 44815, a shipping weight of 0.5 lbs, and the scale as N 1:160, and it recommends the product for ages 14 and up. It does not describe the connection method for this particular card, so the following comes from Bachmann's general E-Z Track assembly sheet, a neighbouring document written for sets, not for a single card of track. The sheet says snap-fit sections must be snapped together tightly, that the rail joiners form a continuous connection for the electric current, and that rail joiners must not slip under the rails without properly connecting. It says all joints should be tight and level, and that the check is to run fingertips lightly over the tops of the rails. It also says that if assembled track must be moved, care should be taken to avoid bending it where sections connect, and that it is always best to assemble the track where it is to be displayed. The sheet adds a compatibility notice: use only Bachmann E-Z Track products with an E-Z Track set, since non-compatible systems may result in unsatisfactory performance.

Who It’s For

An adult building an N-scale layout from separate E-Z Track sections who needs long straight runs, or a gift buyer matching a Bachmann N-scale track system for a hobbyist aged 14 or older. It is plain track: the locomotive, the power pack and the terminal piece are separate.

Alternatives

The 5" Straight Track (44811) is the shorter N-scale straight: its page says the six pieces in its package build 30 inches of railroad, and it names the 10-inch straight and the 30-inch straight as the longer options. The 30" Straight Track in bulk, 25 pieces per box (44887), is Bachmann's longest listed straight for N scale.
