Why Railfans Carry It

Bachmann's page describes this section as connected through terminal wires to a power pack, which provides the current that runs the layout. The same piece is designed to correct derailments that sometimes occur during normal operation, and the page adds that it can help align wheels on the track when a train is being assembled for operation. The listing gives the scale as N 1:160, one piece per card, nickel silver track and gray roadbed. At 1:160, ten inches of track stands for roughly 133 feet of real railroad. It is a different item from the HO-scale 9-inch terminal rerailer (44510) already in this catalog: this one is the N-scale part, and the two are not interchangeable in scale.

In the Field

Bachmann gives two placement rules on the page. If you want to use the rerailer to help place cars on the track, install it where it is easily accessible. Otherwise, install it after a difficult section of track, such as a turnout, a crossing or an S curve, where derailments may occur. Bachmann's general assembly sheet for an E-Z App train set (a neighbouring document, written for a boxed set and not for this part) describes the connection steps: plug the power pack into a wall outlet with its power button in the OFF position, plug the other end of the terminal wire into the terminal/rerailer track, and roll the locomotive's wheels back and forth over that track to seat them. Additional cars are placed the same way and coupled by gently pushing them together. The same sheet calls snap-fit track assembly the most important step: sections snap together tightly, the rail joiners must sit properly because they carry the current, and running fingertips lightly over the rails is the check for bumps or distortions. If a train stops, the sheet says to unplug the power pack at once, check that all wheels are on the track, and make sure nothing metal lies across the rails, including tinsel or ornament hooks. It also says to wipe the track after every eight hours of use with a soft, lint-free cloth or cotton swab, never to use steel wool, and not to leave a train running unattended.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Power connection and rerailer in one section
  • Terminal wire supplied with the section
  • Nickel silver rail on gray roadbed
  • Designed to correct derailments and help align wheels
  • N 1:160 scale, matching the other N-scale E-Z Track sections

Weaknesses

  • A power pack must still supply the current
  • Recommended for ages 14 and up; Bachmann's sheet calls electrically operated products not recommended for children under 14

Who It’s For

An adult building an N-scale layout from separate E-Z Track sections who needs a place to connect a power pack, or a gift buyer matching a Bachmann N-scale track system for a hobbyist aged 14 or older. It is a track part, not a train set: a locomotive and power pack are separate.

Alternatives

The 11.25" Radius Terminal Rerailer with Wire is the curved N-scale version on Bachmann's site, for a layout where the power connection belongs on a curve. The 10" Straight with Under-Track Terminal is a further N-scale way to connect power. The plain 10" Straight (44815) comes six to the card, and Bachmann's page says those six pieces build five feet of railroad.
