Bachmann E-Z Track 11.25" Radius Curved Track, Nickel Silver, N Scale (6 per card)

Bachmann Trains · Budget

Bachmann's 44801 is a card of six 11.25-inch-radius curved sections of N-scale (1:160) E-Z Track, nickel silver rail on gray roadbed, and the six pieces together form half of a 22.5-inch-diameter circle.

Why Railfans Carry It

Every oval, loop or figure 8 in N scale needs curved track, and 11.25 inches is the radius used in Bachmann's own figure 8 recipes. Bachmann's page for the card says the 6 pieces make up one-half (180 degrees) of a 22.5-inch-diameter circle, so a full circle takes two cards, twelve pieces. Other pages in the same catalog show how this radius is used. Bachmann's 90 Degree Crossing page lists what it takes to build a 54-inch by 23.5-inch figure 8: 17 pieces of 11.25-inch radius curved track, one 11.25-inch radius curved terminal rerailer, and 4 pieces of 10-inch straight track. Its 60 Degree Crossing page gives a second recipe, with 19 pieces of this curve (item 44801), four pieces of 5-inch straight track and one 11.25-inch radius curved terminal rerailer with wire.

In the Field

The package panel, which Bachmann's own product photograph shows, carries the E-Z Track System claims: it snaps together, stays together on floors, tables and carpets, and needs no nails, screws or special tools. Bachmann's page for the 12.50-inch radius curve (44852) says that track can be placed on the outside of 11.25-inch radius curved track for double-track mainline realism, and the Half Section 11.25-inch page (44821) says its pieces can be placed on the inside of 12.50-inch radius curve. That Half Section page also describes the 11.25-inch radius as best used for railroad curves in tight spots on a layout. Bachmann's pages for wider radii, such as the 19-inch curve (44804), are the ones that speak of longer locomotives and rolling stock and of mainline operation at higher speeds.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Six curved sections on one card
  • Half of a 22.5-inch-diameter circle per card
  • Nickel silver rail on gray roadbed
  • N 1:160 scale, matching Bachmann's other N-scale E-Z Track
  • Snap-together system sold without tools

Weaknesses

  • Bachmann positions this radius for tight spots; its pages for the 14-, 15.50- and 19-inch curves are the ones that mention longer locomotives and higher speeds
  • One card forms only half a circle, so a closed loop needs a second card
  • Recommended for ages 14 and up

Who It’s For

An adult building an N-scale layout who wants a compact curve in Bachmann's nickel silver E-Z Track, or a gift buyer adding to a hobbyist's existing Bachmann N-scale track at ages 14 and up. It is a track part, not a train set: a locomotive, power pack and power connection are separate.

Alternatives

The 12.50" Radius Curved Track (44852) is the next radius up, and Bachmann says it can sit outside the 11.25-inch curve for double track. The 19" Radius Curved Track (44804), six to the card for one-quarter of a 38-inch circle, is the wide curve Bachmann ties to longer locomotives and higher speeds.
