Why Railfans Carry It

The same piece is designed to correct derailments that sometimes occur during normal railroad operations, and the page says rerailers are installed after difficult sections of track such as a turnout, a crossing or an S curve. The listing gives N 1:160 scale, one piece per card, nickel silver track and gray roadbed. Bachmann's own crossing pages count it into their recipes: the 60 Degree Crossing page lists one 11.25-inch radius curved terminal rerailer with wire (item 44802) with 19 pieces of 44801 and four 5-inch straights for a figure 8, and the 90 Degree Crossing page lists one rerailer with 17 curved pieces and four 10-inch straights for a 54-inch by 23.5-inch figure 8.

In the Field

Bachmann's page gives one placement rule: rerailers are installed after difficult sections of track, such as a turnout, a crossing or an S curve, where derailments may occur. The product photograph on the manufacturer's page shows a curved dark-roadbed section lying in a clear shell with a coiled red wire, its two bare ends and a small terminal beside it, and the card text repeats the power-pack and derailment wording. Bachmann's page for the 10-inch straight under-track terminal (44897) describes that part as making power connections from beneath the layout and eliminating the need to hide exposed wires.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Power connection and rerailer in one curved section
  • Wire supplied in the package
  • Nickel silver rail
  • Designed to correct derailments
  • Same 11.25-inch radius as Bachmann's 44801 curved track
  • N 1:160 scale

Weaknesses

  • A power pack must still supply the current
  • Bachmann's page for the under-track terminal presents that part as the way to avoid hiding exposed wires, which this wire-connected section does not do
  • Recommended for ages 14 and up

Who It’s For

An adult building an N-scale oval, loop or figure 8 from separate E-Z Track sections who needs a place to connect a power pack on a curve, or a gift buyer matching Bachmann's N-scale track for a hobbyist aged 14 or older. It is a track part, not a train set: a locomotive and power pack are separate.

Alternatives

The 10" Straight Terminal Rerailer with Wire (44820) is the straight N-scale version, already in this catalog. The 10" Straight with Under-Track Terminal (44897) makes power connections from beneath the layout instead of through exposed wires.
