Why Railfans Carry It

Bachmann describes this piece as the basic turnout of the E-Z Track system, with a turnout radius matching its 18-inch radius curved track. Its page lists HO scale 1:87, nickel silver rail, gray roadbed and one piece per card. What sets it apart from the right-hand version, listed under model 44562, is the side the branch leaves on: the photo on Bachmann's page shows the packaged turnout with its curved branch bending to the left of the straight track, and the product title reads Remote Turnout - Left. A layout that needs a siding or a junction on the other side takes the right-hand piece instead, and the page for 44562 carries the same description otherwise.

In the Field

Bachmann's page carries one plain requirement: all analog turnouts, meaning non-DCC, require a 16V AC or DC accessory power supply for operation. Plan for that supply before buying; the page says nothing about including one, and the photographed package shows a small black controller with a green wire and a red wire beside the track piece. Bachmann's general assembly sheet, written for an E-Z App train set and stating that not every section applies to every product, calls proper track assembly the most important step: the sections are snapped together tightly while the rail and rail joiners are seated properly, because the joiners form a continuous connection for the electric current. After assembly it says to run fingers lightly over the top of the rails to check that the track is flush and level, with no bumps or distortions, and to correct trouble by checking joiner fit or with a small pair of pliers. It adds that assembly is best done on a firm, flat surface such as a floor, carpet or tabletop, and that a rough layout made by loosely placing sections first shows how much working room there is. Bachmann's page for the 9-inch terminal rerailer with wire (44510) says a rerailer should be installed after a difficult section of track, naming a turnout, crossing or S curve as places where derailments may occur. For upkeep, the sheet says to wipe the rails after every eight hours of use with a soft, lint-free cloth or cotton swab, never to use steel wool, and not to use common solvents, which may damage plastics. If metal lies across the rails, including metal-coated tinsel or holiday ornament hooks, it says to unplug the power pack at once.

Who It’s For

A model railroader adding a left-hand siding or junction to an E-Z Track layout, or a gift buyer for a hobbyist aged 14 or older who already owns Bachmann track and a suitable accessory power supply. It does not suit a layout wired only for DCC without that accessory supply, since the page states the requirement for analog turnouts.

Alternatives

The #6 Turnout - Left (44559) is longer and has a wider radius than this Remote Switch, according to its page, allowing smoother transitions and accommodating longer wheel bases; it is electrically gapped to meet the DCC specifications of the NMRA. The right-hand Remote Turnout (44562) is the complement for a branch on the other side.
