Why Railfans Carry It

Bachmann says the integral E-Z Track clips of this truss bridge expand the E-Z Track system, and its page lists three features: easy snap-fit construction, a track-powered red LED blinking light, and nickel silver rails. The photograph on that page shows a black open truss with a red light housing at the top centre and a short length of rail with a clip tab at one end. Bachmann gives the piece as 10.5 inches long, 2.38 inches wide and 4 inches high, so it is a single short span set into a line of track, not a long viaduct. The page names no prototype, railroad or real bridge that the truss copies, so it is best read as a general HO truss span, not a scale model of one particular structure.

In the Field

The product page calls the light track-powered and lists no separate power connection for it. The page for the 44211 power pack and speed controller describes it as DCC-compatible and appropriate for HO, N and On30 scale trains. The page for the 14-piece graduated pier set, model 44471, says the piers are compatible with steel alloy and nickel silver E-Z Track, whereas this bridge's own page mentions nickel silver rails only. Bachmann's HO Girder Bridge page, model 44474, also lists nickel silver rails and says that bridge can be adapted to other popular track systems.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Track-powered red LED blinking light
  • Integral E-Z Track clips for snap-fit connection
  • Nickel silver rails
  • Single span measured at 10.5 inches long

Weaknesses

  • Page lists nickel silver rails only and does not say whether the bridge is meant for steel alloy E-Z Track
  • In DC, the light's brightness follows train speed; constant brightness is described only for DCC
  • Recommended by the maker for ages 14 and up

Who It’s For

An adult adding a lit bridge span to an HO layout built from Bachmann E-Z Track with nickel silver rail, or a gift buyer for a hobbyist aged 14 or older who already owns that track. It is a short, single-piece span, so it will not suit someone who wants a long bridge or a model of a named prototype, and a layout on steel alloy E-Z Track should check the rail type with Bachmann first, since the page states nickel silver only.

Alternatives

Bachmann's HO E-Z Track Girder Bridge, model 44474, spans 9 inches, comes fully assembled with nickel silver rails, is designed for E-Z Track and can be adapted to other popular track systems; its page mentions no light. For a light at the end of a spur instead, Bachmann's Nickel Silver E-Z Track Flashing LED Bumper, model 44593, is described as ending a track spur and adding a flashing LED that also helps to indicate which sidings are powered.
