Why Railfans Carry It

The box describes a Power Pack and Speed Controller System for use with DC-operated trains in N, HO and On30 scale, with a round speed dial, a direction control switch and a power indicator light on the controller. Output to the track is given on the box as 0.6 amps, and the box lists electronic circuit protection. Bachmann also lists a convenient E-Z Track power wire and a universal track power wire for other track systems, so the box covers both Bachmann's E-Z Track and other track systems. The back panel also lists plug-in wiring.

In the Field

The photographs on Bachmann's page show a black wall-plug power supply on a coiled cable, a pale gray square controller with a direction slider and a large speed dial, and a coiled red wire. The box prints the supply's figures as input 120 volts AC, 60 hertz, 22 watts and output 16 volts DC, 1000 milliamps, 16 volt-amps. The product page adds that the supply is a US-style 110 volt unit and that adapters or converters may be required for other countries. Bachmann's E-Z Command Plus instruction sheet warns never to connect another controller to track controlled by an E-Z Command Plus unit, so this power pack belongs on its own track, apart from a digital set such as the Thunder Chief. Bachmann lists the product as recommended for ages 14 and up, and the box says the finely detailed hobby product is not intended for children.

Who It’s For

A beginner who has a DC-operated locomotive and a section of track and needs the controller. It is a plain controller with no sound, no digital addressing and no lighting control, so it does not suit a DCC sound locomotive on a set with its own control center.

Alternatives

Bachmann's Rail Chief page (00706) lists a power pack and speed controller among the contents of the complete set, alongside a GP40 diesel with headlight, a 47 by 38 inch oval, a signal bridge and 36 figures; choose it if the track and rolling stock are not yet owned. For digital control, the Echo Valley Express page (00825) lists an E-Z Command Plus Control Center and a DCC sound-equipped Alco 2-6-0 steam locomotive.
