Waycross Historic Rail Depot

Georgia's official tourism site, Explore Georgia, lists the building as the "Historic Rail Depot & Rail Observation Center" at 315 Plant Avenue, Suite A, and invites visitors to step out the back of the depot to watch CSX trains travelling to and from Rice Yard. It lists parking on site.

Suite A is today the office of the Downtown Waycross Development Authority (DWDA), a public authority created by the Georgia Legislature, open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Behind the depot the DWDA runs a Caboose Platform, which it describes as a spot to "simply watch the trains go by" with seating — but the same platform is also rented out as an outdoor event venue (bookings on (912) 283-7787), so it may be occupied by a private function.

Before driving in, check the free Virtual Railfan "Waycross, Georgia, USA | LIVE Train Camera (PTZ)" stream: the camera is mounted on the DWDA's building and shows the same tracks. A scanner on the two CSX frequencies listed under train activity will tell you what is approaching.

Note that the Waycross visitor information centre, once housed in the depot, is now at 417 Pendleton Street according to the City of Waycross, so do not count on brochures or staff at the depot itself.

The setting is downtown Waycross: a street grid laid out in the shape of a Maltese Cross, the emblem of the Plant System Railroad, lined with storefronts listed on the National Register of Historic Places (City of Waycross). Next to the depot, the former Railway Express Agency building was restored in 2001 as a 400-seat banquet hall. Plant Avenue in front of the depot is US 84 / GA 38, a designated truck route. The terrain is the flat coastal plain of southeast Georgia — neighbouring survey points sit at 39 to 42 m (128 to 138 ft) above sea level.

Waycross' former Union Station was built in 1911 and primarily served the Atlantic Coast Line (ACL), according to Explore Georgia; the city was a key junction for the ACL and for the earlier Plant System, which the ACL acquired in 1902. The Waycross Chamber of Commerce writes that the depot was built to replace the original station, destroyed by fire after a train derailment.

Railroads made the town. The City of Waycross notes that the Plant System created a crossroads of rail lines here, that the settlement was known as Old Nine or Number Nine after its railroad station number, and that it was also called Pendleton and Tebeauville before taking the name Waycross in the 1870s. The downtown streets still follow the Maltese Cross of the Plant System's logo.

After 1902 the ACL designated the line through the depot as its "Jesup—Folkston (via Waycross) Line." By 1949 it carried passenger trains including the City of Miami and the Dixie Flyer, alongside many daily freights (Wikipedia, Jesup Subdivision). Today CSX runs it as a freight corridor, with Rice Yard — described by Wikipedia as the largest railroad yard in the Southeast and the second-largest in the CSX system — just west of the junction.

This is one of the few places where a state tourism office itself promotes train watching from the back of a historic station on an active Class I main line. It sits a short distance from the junction where three former ACL subdivisions meet and from Rice Yard, and a free live camera on the same building lets you check the action before you set off.

On the map it fills a gap: the nearest Spotatrain spots, the Folkston Funnel (53 km / 33 mi) and the Jesup Railfan Viewing Platform (63 km / 39 mi), sit at either end of the Jesup Subdivision that passes the depot.
