About this event

The Adirondack Railroad, operated by the volunteer-based Adirondack Railway Preservation Society, runs THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride from Utica's Union Station. The operator describes a trip to the "North Pole" during which passengers are served hot chocolate and cookies, and during which Santa boards the train and gives each passenger the first gift of Christmas, a silver bell.

The operator offers Coach Class and First Class. First Class has table seating (each table seats four) and a souvenir ceramic mug. All seats are assigned, and the operator says it no longer accepts requests to sit with another party: it advises booking all tickets under one reservation. It also schedules select Saturday daytime trips for younger passengers.

The railroad says the event has become an annual tradition for families from upstate New York and beyond.

What to expect

About two hours, starting from Utica's Union Station: hot chocolate and cookies, the story of The Polar Express, and a visit from Santa, who gives each passenger a silver bell. Children and parents are encouraged to wear pajamas, and the operator suggests bringing a camera.
