About this event

Espresso Natale ("Christmas Express") is a set of special day trains from Rome Termini to Arezzo and back, sold by the railway-tourism agency Pallenium Tourism through its Italia in Treno website. The operator describes it as a comfortable alternative to driving, with no traffic or parking worries, on a dedicated direct connection through the Tuscia and Etruria countryside.

On board, Pallenium staff offer guided assistance, and a restaurant car placed in the middle of the train sells fresh snacks and drinks during the journey. The operator also promises "a magic surprise" on board.

In Arezzo, the operator says it is about a ten-minute walk from the station, along via Guido Monaco, to Piazza Grande, where the Christmas markets are held, and its page describes the Fortezza Medicea as the city's panoramic viewpoint and the home of Santa Claus. The operator describes a Tyrolean-themed village with typical products from Tyrol, Austria and Germany, and a wide variety of Christmas exhibitions, activities and entertainment in the fortress.

What to expect

A same-day return trip by train from Rome Termini to Arezzo (about three hours each way), with staff assistance, a restaurant car selling snacks and drinks and a surprise on board, followed by a day at the Arezzo Christmas markets on foot from the station. Dogs up to 20 kg are allowed free on a lead.

Practical info

Departs from Rome Termini on Sunday mornings (the booking pages show 08:15; the operator gives a range of 08:00 to 08:30) and returns from Arezzo in the late afternoon, reaching Rome in the evening. The operator says the times are subject to change until RFI, the infrastructure manager, releases the official timetable. Children from 0 to 6 travel free without an assigned seat; children from 6 to 14 pay a reduced fare; adults are 14 and over. The train has carriages with steps for getting on and off and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users. The operator says entrance tickets for the Santa Claus house and the Fortezza di Natale in Arezzo are bought on the Arezzo Christmas-market website.
