About this event

Modell-Bahn-Nürnberg is presented by its organiser, the Förderverein ModellBahn Region Nürnberg e.V., as a new model railway and model-making exhibition for the Franconia region. It is held at the Ofenwerk, a former furnace works in the Klingenhof district of Nuremberg. The organiser says its goal is to grow, step by step, into a popular annual event for the Nuremberg metropolitan area.

For its first edition the organiser describes 1,496 square metres of floor space, with more than 800 square metres given to layouts, dioramas and models shown by 16 regional clubs and groups. Manufacturers, service providers and dealers present rolling stock, electronics and accessories from their ranges, and there is a market (Börse) for used models, including locomotives, wagons, kits and scenery material in sizes from N to II sold by a Nuremberg model railway club.

The organiser describes the exhibition as family friendly, with hands-on areas for children, and lists demonstrations and presentations by experienced modellers. It also arranges a vintage bus shuttle to the Ofenwerk and, at the weekend, on to the historic tram depot St. Peter. On the Saturday and Sunday the Fränkische Museums-Eisenbahn e.V. Nürnberg, whose grounds are close to the Ofenwerk, holds an open day of its own.

What to expect

Layouts in several gauges, dioramas and models shown by regional clubs, stands from manufacturers and dealers, a used-model market, and demonstrations by experienced modellers, as the organiser describes them. Children can drive trains on selected layouts, with possibly longer waits. Food trucks are on site at the Ofenwerk.

Practical info

Held at the Ofenwerk, Klingenhofstraße 72, 90411 Nuremberg. By public transport, take the U2 from Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof to Herrnhütte (about 9 minutes) and walk roughly 700 m, or use the vintage bus shuttle that runs from the Nordostbahnhof and Herrnhütte U-Bahn stations to the Ofenwerk; at the weekend the buses continue to the historic tram depot St. Peter. The organiser warns that car parking is limited and recommends public transport. Animals may not be brought in. Children up to 8 years have free entry; a reduced ticket applies to ages 9 to 17, pupils, students, pensioners and people with a disability (grade of 50 or more) with proof. Day tickets, a three-day ticket and a family ticket are offered. At the weekend, a ticket for the exhibition gives reduced entry to the tram museum, and a tram museum ticket gives reduced entry to the exhibition.
