About this event

The Rhätische Bahn offers the "Bernina Dampfschneeschleuder-Spektakel" as a nostalgic trip. The operator presents the steam snow blower Xrotd 9213 as the last of its kind in the world and shows how it clears the snow on the highest railway crossing of the Alps, between Pontresina, Ospizio Bernina and Alp Grüm.

A specialist guide comments on the work and explains the technology, from oil lubrication to bringing the machine up to operating temperature. The blower is pushed by locomotive 182. During the day the passengers ride in an extra clearing train (ABe II 46+47) to photo points along the line, so they can photograph and film the snow blower at work.

The operator includes a lunch on Alp Grüm, with a choice of minestrone, penne prosciutto or pizzoccheri, mineral water and coffee. The operator recommends weatherproof clothing and good footwear.

What to expect
