Where to stand, park and take a break

Before you go — access is not guaranteed

Photo positions show where photographers have stood, not places we have visited. Some may be on private or railway property. Stay on public land and never cross fences, tracks or “No Trespassing” signs: being on railroad property is illegal and dangerous. Parking and restrooms come from official and map sources.

Seasons

Trains run all year, and the view is available all year. What changes is the way in: outside summer Alp Grüm is accessible only by rail, as the high trails from Ospizio Bernina and up from Cavaglia are closed by snow. In summer the station can be combined with walks to Lago Palü or along the trail toward Ospizio Bernina, which also opens the higher view from Sassal Masone. Winter brings a snow-covered curve and glacier, with the train as the only access; summer brings the longest days and the walking options.

Safety

This is an operating railway station. Stay behind the platform edge markings whenever a train is due, never cross the tracks except where a path is signed to do so, and remember that trains arrive from both directions. The trail that starts just below the viewing area toward Cavaglia and Lago Palü is a mountain path: sturdy shoes are needed, and it is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

Weather at 2,091 m turns quickly; carry a warm layer even on a sunny day. In winter the only way in and out is the train, so check the last departure before you go.

What runs here

Alp Grüm is a crossing station on the metre-gauge, electrified Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). According to the station's Wikipedia entry, based on the December 2023 timetable, two services call here: the RegioExpress/Regio, hourly between St. Moritz and Tirano, and the Bernina Express, with several round trips per day between Chur or St. Moritz and Tirano. RhB does not publish a single daily total for the station, and none is given here.

The line is single track, and Alp Grüm was built as a crossing loop: the station has three through tracks and a siding, two of them served by platforms. Trains in opposite directions can therefore meet here, which is when two trains stand in the same frame. The Bernina line also carries goods in freight cars attached to passenger trains, up to the towing limit of those trains, as described in the line's Wikipedia article; no separate freight timetable is published.

Best angles for photos

The classic picture is taken from the south end of the viewing area beside the station, looking roughly south along the 180-degree curve: a red RhB train leaving or approaching the station on the curve, with the Palü Glacier, Lago Palü or Val Poschiavo behind it. A standard zoom (24-70 mm) covers the curve from the viewing area; a short telephoto picks out a train lower on the descent toward Cavaglia.

Light, computed from the position: the view faces approximately south, so around midday the sun is almost straight ahead and the side of the train facing the camera is in shade. In the morning the sun is to the south-east (on the left of the frame), and in summer late afternoons it moves to the south-west and then the west (on the right), giving side light on the train and the glacier. At 46.4 degrees north the summer sun rises in the north-east and sets in the north-west, so the longest side-lit windows are early and late on long June and July days.

For a higher, wider view, the summer trail toward Ospizio Bernina passes Sassal Masone, approximately 1 km (0.6 mi) north-west of the station, which a hiking source describes as looking down on Alp Grüm and the curve of the line together.

Trainspotting Experience

Alp Grüm is a station, a hamlet and a viewpoint at once, at 2,091 m (6,860 ft) on the south side of the Bernina Pass. Except in summer it can only be reached by train, and there is no road at any time of year. RhB lists it as an unstaffed station, so the platform and the viewing area beside it are open to anyone who arrives by train or on foot.

What people come for is the curve. Immediately south of the station the line swings through 180 degrees and starts its descent into Val Poschiavo (Puschlav); from the south end of the viewing area you watch the tracks curve around the mountainside, with the Palü Glacier and Lago Palü beyond. Cavaglia, the next station, is clearly visible 400 m (1,300 ft) below and 1.5 km (0.9 mi) away in a straight line, but 6 km (3.7 mi) away by rail, which gives an idea of how hard the line works on this slope.

The practical rhythm is set by the timetable: one regional train each way per hour plus several Bernina Express trains per day, with crossings at the station itself. Check the RhB departures board before settling in, and plan a return train, since there is no other way back in winter.

Landscape, Setting & Local Atmosphere

The station stands at the tree line and marks the last stop before the Italian-speaking valley of Poschiavo. To the south the ground drops away into the Puschlav; across it hangs the Palü Glacier below Piz Palü, with the turquoise Lago Palü (1,923 m / 6,309 ft) on the slope below the station. The 1923 station building, with its buffet and hotel, is the only substantial structure in sight.

The Bernina line reaches this point from the pass through a chain of galleries and short tunnels (the Sassal Mason Gallery, 348 m, among them) before the Grüm Gallery and the station itself. From here onward it descends at up to 7 % through tight curves and spiral tunnels.

At this altitude the weather changes quickly: cloud can rise out of the valley and hide the glacier within minutes, and wind across the open viewing area is common.

Historical or Cultural Relevance

The section of the Bernina line between Ospizio Bernina and Poschiavo, on which Alp Grüm lies, was opened on 5 June 1910 by the Bernina Railway Company. Alp Grüm was created as a crossing loop during construction, and the present station building, with its buffet and hotel, opened in 1923.

The Bernina Railway Company, weakened financially, was taken over by the Rhaetian Railway in 1943, which then modernised the line and renewed its summit section. The Bernina line is the highest adhesion railway in Europe and, with inclines of up to 7 %, one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world: it climbs without a rack. On 7 July 2008 it was inscribed, together with the Albula line, on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes.

The 180-degree curve at Alp Grüm is part of that engineering answer: rather than tunnel through the mountain, the line doubles back on itself in the open to lose height, and the station sits exactly at the turn.

What Makes This Spot Different

Few stations anywhere put a working mountain railway, a glacier and a 180-degree curve in one view from the platform. Alp Grüm does it at 2,091 m with no road, so everyone who stands here arrived by train or on foot. Cavaglia, 400 m lower and 1.5 km away in a straight line, is 6 km away by rail: the descent is visible, loop by loop, from the station.

The station is also a crossing loop on a single-track line, so trains in both directions stop and pass here, and the same spot works for arrivals, departures and meets.

Frequently Asked Questions

QCan you drive to Alp Grüm?

No. There is no road. Alp Grüm is reached by Rhaetian Railway train, or in summer on foot from Ospizio Bernina or Cavaglia. RhB states there are no parking spaces at the station.

QIs it free to stand on the platform and watch the trains?

Yes. RhB lists Alp Grüm as an unstaffed station, and the viewing area beside the platform is open. Only the restaurant terrace is for its guests.

QWhich trains stop at Alp Grüm?

According to the December 2023 timetable, an hourly RegioExpress/Regio between St. Moritz and Tirano, and several Bernina Express round trips per day between Chur or St. Moritz and Tirano.

QWhere is the famous curve?

Immediately south of the station: the Bernina line turns through 180 degrees as it leaves Alp Grüm and starts its descent into Val Poschiavo. It is visible from the south end of the viewing area.

QWhen is the light best?

The view faces approximately south, so midday light is against the camera. Morning and late afternoon give side light on the trains and the glacier.
