About this event

The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Rush, New York, presents Pumpkin Patch Train Rides as its celebration of fall. The operator describes trains, seasonal treats and pumpkins: a vintage diesel train carries visitors from the museum's Industry Depot to its hilltop restoration yard, where snacks, exhibits and more are found, and trains run back to the depot.

The visit includes two 15-minute train rides on a choice of caboose or open-air car, a special exhibit of operating Lionel trains by the Flower City Tinplate Trackers, food from Reservoir Dogz with seasonal treats such as kettle corn and hot cider, and complimentary juice boxes and cookies. In the festive pumpkin patch, kids pick out their own pumpkin to take home.

Visitors also have access to the museum itself, which the operator describes as the largest collection of preserved railroad equipment in New York State, with a restoration shop, exhibits on railroad history and operations, numerous cars to explore and a gift shop. Industry Depot was originally built by the Erie Railroad.

What to expect

Two 15-minute train rides on a caboose or an open-air car, with exhibits at both ends. Trains depart Industry Depot every half hour through the event day and run back from the hilltop restoration yard every half hour; the operator suggests planning at least an hour for the visit. Along the way: the pumpkin patch, a Lionel train exhibit, food for sale, juice boxes and cookies. Dress comfortably for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes.

Practical info

Trains board at Industry Depot, 282 Rush Scottsville Road, Rush, New York, on Route 251, a few minutes from Exit 11 of I-390 and about 20 minutes from downtown Rochester. Tickets are sold through the operator's Eventbrite page and can also be bought on arrival at Industry Depot, but the operator says many departures sell out and strongly suggests buying in advance. Children aged 4 and under ride without a ticket. Most of the experience is outdoors on crushed gravel walkways, and some exhibits require climbing steps. The train rides are not wheelchair accessible because of the vintage freight equipment; staff help with boarding when possible and canes, walkers and wheelchairs may be brought on board. Pets are not allowed on the grounds or trains, except certified service animals. Restrooms are inside the depot, with portable toilets next to the Restoration Shop.
