The free public camera faces west towards Rochester at milepost 361.240; a second fixed camera faces east towards Syracuse and is reserved for Virtual Railfan members. The traffic is mostly CSX freight, joined by four daily Amtrak Empire Service trains on the Chicago–New York corridor, occasional Canadian National trains, and rare BNSF movements — the sort of foreign power that makes a regular watcher sit up. The host is the Village of Fairport itself, which publishes visiting information for anyone who wants to stand on the platform rather than watch from a screen.
What to watch for
Over 40 trains a day makes this a busy sightline, and the mix is the appeal: CSX road freight all day, four Amtrak Empire Service trains in their Amfleet consists, and then the outliers — Canadian National power appearing occasionally and BNSF units rarely enough to be an event. Two defect detectors are audible on 160.800 (AAR 46), at East Rochester (QC364.1) and Pittsford (QW351.5), so you get advance warning from either direction. The platform sits in a historic Erie Canal village, and the canal itself is a short walk away.
