About this event

Swanage Railway welcomes the world-famous steam locomotive Flying Scotsman as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. The operator offers four ways to experience the visit, from travelling behind the locomotive to simply seeing it up close on a static display day.

Standard Travel includes a reserved-seat round trip behind Flying Scotsman between Swanage and Norden, passing through Corfe Castle station and beneath the ruins of Corfe Castle, plus a Freedom of the Line ticket for the railway's other steam service that day. Luxury options include a Bubbles and Scone package in a restored Maunsell coach and 1920s afternoon tea or breakfast aboard the Devon Belle. Private compartments for up to six are available in the coach Loch Rannoch.

On static display days Flying Scotsman stands at Swanage station and does not run train services: the Static Day Experience ticket does not include a ride behind Flying Scotsman, but it includes a Freedom of the Line ticket for unlimited travel on the railway's heritage steam services that day. To ride behind the locomotive you need Standard Travel (or one of the operator's other packages).

What to expect

Either a reserved-seat return journey behind Flying Scotsman between Swanage and Norden through the Isle of Purbeck (Standard Travel), or a static display day at Swanage station, when Flying Scotsman does not run and the ticket gives unlimited travel on the railway's other steam services. The operator says tickets are expected to be extremely popular.

Practical info
