About this event

Timeline Events runs an evening photo shoot inside the main shed at Didcot Railway Centre, whose current custodians the organizer names as the Great Western Society. The organizer says it has returned to the shed a number of times since its first event of this type.

The evening concentrates exclusively in the main shed, using one of the Society's tender locomotives as the main focus, accompanied by other engines stabled there. Four or five re-enactors in period outfits portray loco crews, cleaners, fitters and maybe a works foreman, to recreate scenes from the steam era. The organizer brings the locomotives to life with smoke machines, steam machines and creative lighting, and plans several cameos around the shed's four roads, backlighting many of the scenes.

The organizer says the shed has stood on the site for around a hundred years and still holds many original fixtures and fittings. The event is limited to 25 photographers.

What to expect

An evening session starting at around 18:00 in the main shed, planned to finish around 22:00. Bring a tripod, spare batteries, filters, a torch, sturdy outdoor shoes and warm clothing; the organizer hopes for a cold night on shed. All levels are welcome and the fitness level required is low. Visitors with mobility issues are asked to email the organizer before booking.

Practical info

The venue is Didcot Railway Centre, Station Road, Didcot, Oxfordshire OX11 7NJ. Tickets are booked on the organizer's website; places are limited to 25 photographers and the organizer recommends booking early given how popular previous events at the Centre have been. Organizer telephone: 07770 227625. The organizer's terms say it does not guarantee start times and may cancel, alter or suspend an event, or substitute a different engine if necessary.
