About this event

Steam Charters, the photo charter business of Dak Dillon Photography, hosts two days of photography on Maine's historic two-foot narrow gauge Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway. The organizer describes a mixed freight consist led by No. 9, operating over the 3.5-mile line in Alna amid autumn color, using the railroad's rural scenery, historic infrastructure and compact narrow gauge character. The railway museum lists this photo special on its own site and links to the organizer's page.

The first day runs from sunrise to sunset with a mixed freight working the line, and ends with a night photo session using the railroad's turntable, engine house and yard. The second day runs from early morning to late afternoon, again with a mixed freight in fall color; depending on operating conditions, part of that day may feature a short passenger train instead of the freight.

Participation is limited to about 20 to 25 photographers for safety and picture quality. The organizer says that weather and color can never be guaranteed, and that it reserves the right to change the schedule, dates or rolling stock because of operating conditions on the host railroad.

What to expect

Two days of photography on the narrow gauge line: sunrise to sunset on the first day with a night photo session at the turntable, engine house and yard, then early morning to late afternoon on the second. Further details are provided to participants after registration. Questions can be emailed to the organizer.

Practical info

The railway museum is at 97 Cross Road, Alna, Maine; the museum says all train rides and activities start at its Sheepscot station at that address, and the organizer names only the railway and Alna as the place. Participation is limited to 25 photographers. Registration is on the organizer's site, with payment by credit card (the price includes the processing fee) or by check (no fee). The organizer does not recommend the event for young children; participants must be ready to get on and off the train many times, on rough or uneven ground, in sturdy shoes. A refund policy and terms are published by the organizer.
