Why Railfans Carry It

Bachmann presents The Stallion as a set that races along the rails, and the consist is a classic freight train: an EMD F7-A diesel with a working headlight, a 40' gondola with a removable coal load, a 36' single-dome tank car and a 36' wide-vision caboose. N is the smallest scale Bachmann offers. Its Getting Started page says a typical railcar in this scale measures 4 inches by 3/4 inch, and it suggests N for anyone who wants to run long trains but has limited space. The same page adds that, even with just a basic oval of E-Z Track, starting in N gives the most room to grow a railroad over time.

In the Field

This is an indoor layout. The track is a 24-inch circle of snap-fit E-Z Track with 11 curved pieces and one curved plug-in terminal rerailer, and Bachmann lists the product measurements as 24 in. long, 24 in. wide and 1.4 in. high. Bachmann's Getting Started page says E-Z Track has a ballasted look on pre-assembled roadbed that raises trains to a mainline ride height and keeps them clear of dust or carpet fibers, and that straight, curved, turnout and rerailer E-Z Track pieces are available in N. Bachmann's FAQ says its N scale trains are designed for indoor use only, that E-Z Track conforms to National Model Railroad Association standards and is fully compatible with most trains of the same scale regardless of manufacturer, and that unless otherwise stated its models run on standard 12VDC electric power. The power pack is a US-style 110 volt unit, and the product page notes that other countries may need adapters or converters. An illustrated instruction manual is included.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • EMD F7-A diesel with a working headlight
  • Gondola with a removable coal load, single-dome tank car and wide-vision caboose
  • Snap-fit E-Z Track circle, power pack and speed controller in the box
  • N scale 1:160, the smallest scale Bachmann offers
  • Illustrated instruction manual included

Weaknesses

  • Recommended for ages 14 and up, and Bachmann's FAQ says all its models contain small parts that can be choking hazards
  • The box holds a single 24-inch circle of track, smaller than the 34 in. by 24 in. oval in Bachmann's Freightmaster N set, so a bigger layout needs more track
  • US-style 110 volt power supply: other countries may need adapters or converters
  • Designed for indoor use only, according to Bachmann's FAQ
  • The product page lists no DCC or sound

Who It’s For

An adult or a family starting in N who has room for a 24-inch circle and wants a complete freight set in one box. Bachmann's Getting Started page recommends beginning with a train set, says starter sets come with a train, track and electric speed controller, and says they make fantastic gifts. For a younger child, Bachmann's FAQ says its standard-line models are designed for ages 14 and up but may be used by children below that age with direct adult supervision.

Alternatives

Bachmann Freightmaster (24022) is another N scale set, with an EMD GP40 diesel, a flatcar with a shipping container load, a gondola, a plug-door boxcar, a caboose, a 34 in. by 24 in. oval of E-Z Track, a freight station building, 24 signs and 12 telephone poles; it is also recommended for ages 14 and up. Bachmann Merry Christmas Express (24027) is the holiday-decorated N set, with a red North Pole & Southern 0-6-0 steam locomotive, a bow-wrapped boxcar, a garland-festooned hopper and a wreath-decorated caboose on a 24-inch circle of nickel silver E-Z Track.
