About this cam

The camera sits at the Mendota Union Depot Railroad Museum and looks out on BNSF's Chicago–Galesburg main line. Six Amtrak trains a day call at the depot, and the California Zephyr passes twice daily without stopping.

Mendota sits on BNSF Railway's main line between Chicago and Galesburg, and the camera watches it from the platform of the Mendota Union Depot Railroad Museum on Main Street. The operator, Steel Highway Railcams, states that train movements here include BNSF trains running between Chicago and Galesburg as well as a local based in Mendota.

The depot is still a working Amtrak stop. According to the operator, six daily trains call here: the Chicago–Los Angeles Southwest Chief plus two state-sponsored services, the Illinois Zephyr and the Carl Sandburg. The California Zephyr passes the camera twice a day but does not stop, so it comes through at speed.

The museum that hosts the camera is worth knowing about in its own right. Volunteers staff the depot on weekend afternoons, and an operating HO-scale layout inside represents downtown Mendota and its railyards as they were in 1940. On the grounds stands CB&Q 4978, a Mikado-class 2-8-2 built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1923; it was donated to the LaSalle County Historical Society in 1964 and has been displayed at the depot on loan since 1997. The Union Depot Railroad Museum maintains the locomotive and the rolling stock beside it.

What to watch for

Amtrak is the reliable draw: six scheduled calls a day at the depot itself, so you can watch a Charger and its Venture cars pull up to the platform rather than blur past. The Southwest Chief is the long-distance one; the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg are the Chicago–Quincy state trains. The California Zephyr is the prize for a different reason — it runs through twice a day without stopping, so it takes the main at track speed. Between them, BNSF freight and the Mendota-based local work the line. The operator monitors AAR channel 85 (161.385 MHz), so radio traffic is part of the feed.
