Mid-Continent Railway Museum operates a seven-mile, 55-minute round-trip excursion on a former branch line of the Chicago & North Western Railway, running south from North Freedom through the unincorporated town of La Rue to a rock quarry at Quartzite Lake before returning. All trains are currently powered by diesel locomotives, while the museum works toward an "ongoing effort to again operate steam locomotives." Passengers ride in restored steel coaches built roughly a century ago, with caboose and locomotive-observation seating available for an added fare.
