Austell sits where two Norfolk Southern main lines part company. The **Atlanta North Subdivision** (Georgia Division, milepost 134) runs between Atlanta and Chattanooga; the **East End Subdivision** (Alabama Division, milepost 650) heads west to Birmingham. Both are Southern Railway legacies: the Atlanta North Sub began as the East Tennessee & Georgia Railroad in 1836, the East End Sub as the Georgia Pacific Railroad in 1854, and both had joined the Southern Railway by 1894. The cameras — one PTZ and one fixed — have been running since 10 August 2023, hosted by Cincinnati Junction, Frog Rock Brewing Company and Austell Cowork. They look out from a concrete viewing area on Broad Street, directly onto the diverging routes. A mile and a half to the north-west lies **Whitaker Yard**, named for John Wesley Whitaker — a Tuskegee Airman and the Central of Georgia's first Black locomotive engineer — whose intermodal terminal adds to the traffic passing the camera.
What to watch for
Norfolk Southern intermodal and manifest freights on both routes, with the split itself as the payoff: watch which way a train takes at the junction to know whether it is Chattanooga-bound or Birmingham-bound. Amtrak's **Crescent** passes once each way on the East End Sub. Whitaker Yard traffic feeds the corridor from the north-west.
