The I Line traces its roots to the 1836 Hiwassee Railroad, one of the South's earliest railroad ventures, later folded into the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia Railway and then the Southern Railway. An 1880s cutoff between Ooltewah and Cohutta created today's H Line, shortening the route and turning it into the region's primary main line.
While the I Line now sees only occasional maintenance-of-way and storage trains, the H Line remains a vital Norfolk Southern corridor, per the operator carrying roughly 30 trains a day — intermodal, manifest and coal traffic between Atlanta and East Tennessee.
