Sweetwater, Tennessee — NS West End District

The camera stands at the Sweetwater Depot & Visitors Center, a replica station opened in 2016 on the site of the town's railroad heritage, and it is hosted by the City of Sweetwater. What passes in front of it is Norfolk Southern's West End District, the line from Knoxville down to Ooltewah, Tennessee, where — in Virtual Railfan's own words — it "connects with NS's H Line toward Chattanooga and Atlanta". The operator's traffic figure for the line is "an average of 15 trains per day".

The railroad here is older than most: Sweetwater "was first settled in the 1820s and grew rapidly when the East Tennessee & Georgia Railroad arrived in 1852", and the operator notes that the town's "strategic location made it a key Civil War supply center and the site of multiple military engagements". The ET&G was folded into the Southern Railway when that company was formed in 1894, and Southern in turn merged into Norfolk Southern in 1982 — so the modern NS main past the depot is a direct descendant of an 1852 line.

One piece of rolling stock anchors the scene. The "Sweetwater" passenger car is ex-Southern Railway Coach 811, built in 1941 by Pullman-Standard, and it ran on The Pelican between New York and New Orleans. It was placed downtown in Circle Park in 1981 and now houses the Chamber of Commerce office.
